| Plot: | In the late 1970s Tirunelveli, a man and a boy are trekking across a river, carrying homemade bombs. In another part of the village, a woman, man and a girl are also hiding from the police. A narrator reveals in a flashback that the man is Dhanush and the boy is his son Ken Karunas. In contrast, the woman, man, and child are Dhanush's wife, Manju Warrier, her brother Pasupathy and daughter Lakshmi. They also had an older son called Teejay Arunasalam. They are a family of farmers living in Thekkoor (lit. southern village). Dhanush has a close relationship with his older son but is distant, almost abusive with Ken Karunas. Dhanush's family, along with most residents of Thekkoor, are Dalits. Aadukalam Naren is an upper-caste landlord from Vadakoor (lit. northern village), who needs Dhanush's 3 acres of land for a factory, to which the family is against selling, especially Teejay Arunasalam. One day Manuju Warrier is attacked by one of Aadukalam Naren's sons, to which Teejay Arunasalam retaliates by severely injuring him and his men and gets imprisoned consequently. Dhanush pleads with Aadukalam Naren to get Teejay Arunasalam released, and in reply, Aadukalam Naren asks Dhanush to prostrate before every male resident of the landlord's village as atonement. When Teejay Arunasalam hears of his father's humiliation, he beats Aadukalam Naren with a slipper. In revenge, Aadukalam Naren's henchmen, led by a hunter Kariyan, behead Teejay Arunasalam and dumps his headless body naked in their field. Manu Warrier is broken with inability to even complain because of missing head as evidence and after a year, Ken Karunas is compelled to kill Aadukalam Naren in revenge. Dhanush sees the killing, cuts the lights there, tells the family, and flees with Ken Karunas. The film switches back to the present. Kariyan is asked to find the pair, tracks them down, and almost kills Ken Karunas. Dhanush defeats them all but kills none. While the two recovers, Dhanush explains why he spared their lives. Twenty years before, he was a village-famous moonshine brewer and trusted servant to A.Venkatesh, a landlord. One day, he convinces his boss to employ Nitish Veera, A.Venkatesh's distant relative, as a clerk. Dhanush's brother Pasupathy and Praksh Raj, a Brahmin Communist lawyer, are attempting to regain their community's Panchami land from landlords who had seized it illegally. Dhanush's elder sister's daughter Ammu Abirami proposes to Dhanush, and he accepts. The family also accepts. Nitish Veera slowly gains A.Venkatesh's trust and becomes his Mill accountant. Meanwhile, Dhanush slowly falls in love with Ammu Abirami. When Dhanush gives her sandals to wear, Nitish Veera hits her and forces her to walk through the village with the sandals on her head. Dhanush retaliates by hitting him with sandals in the middle of the village and ties him up, but is reprimanded by A.Venkatesh. Dhanush quits brewing and joins his brother. One night, before a meeting was conducted by Prakash Raj and Subramaniam Siva with the other labourers, news arrives that Prakash Raj was arrested, and Dhanush is sent to get the documents authorising the meeting. When he returns, Subramanian Siva and the others have been killed by Nitish Veera and his men, while Dhanush's family including Manju Warrier, along with many others, are burned alive in their huts.
